Internal Linking: The Most Underrated Lever in SEO

May 19, 2026 · 6 min read · SEO & Chill team

If backlinks are votes from the outside world, internal links are you telling search engines what matters on your own site. They are fully under your control, cost nothing, and most sites use them badly. Which is exactly what makes them a lever.

What internal links actually do

Three things. They pass authority from strong pages to pages that need it. They give search engines context through anchor text. A link that says “page caching” teaches crawlers what the target page is about. And they keep readers on your site, which is both a business goal and a behavioural signal.

The three mistakes almost everyone makes

Orphan pages. Pages with no internal links pointing at them are invisible to crawlers that arrive through your site structure. New posts are orphans by default. Publishing without linking is publishing into a void.

Lazy anchor text. “Click here” and “read more” waste the context signal. Descriptive anchors do double duty for crawlers and for readers deciding whether to click.

Flat linking. Linking only from new posts to old ones. The reverse direction. Going back into established posts to link forward to new content. Is where the authority transfer actually happens, and it is the step everyone skips because it is tedious.

A habit that compounds

Every time you publish: add three links from the new post to related existing pages, and two links from established pages back to the new post. Five links, five minutes if you know your archive. Much longer if you have to search it. This is the tedious-but-mechanical step we automated in SEO & Chill: the AI scans your archive, suggests the most relevant targets with anchor text and placement, and you approve or skip each one. The judgment stays yours; the archive-crawling does not.

Where to start on an existing site

Find your orphans first. Pages with zero or one incoming internal link. Connect them to your strongest related pages. On most sites this single pass produces more movement than any other on-page change, because you are unlocking content that already exists.

Less doing, more done.
